Hosta Alligator Shoes

Hosta Alligator Shoes

Hosta Alligator shoes is very interesting both in name an appearance. This mounding plant gets its name from the strongly quilted appearance of the leaves. Many Hostas have this leaf quality but it seldom is as clear and clean as it is on this plant. The quilting of the leaf is reminiscent of the old alligator leather that at one time was made into shoes and boots.

This is a medium sized perennial plant that will grow to 18 inches tall by 35 inches in diameter. Alligator shoes will fit into most gardens except for the smallest ones.

This plant has variegated leaves which are large and very attractive. It has a blue base color with a narrow white/green margin. Each leaf of this plant is very thick and somewhat wavy which gives it some additional visual appeal.

Alligator shoes is a shade plant and should not be planted in the sun. Slugs can be a problem with this plant even though it has thick leaves.

The pale lavender flowers of this plant blooms in mid-summer and are tubular in shape.

This is a good shade loving perennial that requires no special care. It is easy to grow and easy to propagate. It has to be propagated by division as the seeds that it produces are sterile and can't sprout to form new plants. This perennial is not patented and as such can be divided at will.

If an unusual shade plant is needed for a garden this is a good one to check out and possibly add to the shade beds.
